I'm in the process of buying a new home, from a shoebox of an apartment to a three-bedroom, three bath ranch. In the midst of all that has to do with the process, such as borrowing, the change in public services, procurement of engines, etc, comes the problem of supply of this new home.
My apartment comes with a refrigerator. My house is not. No microwave, either. I'll have to buy a new bed in the room of my son. Not to mention various sections, shelves, tables and end (the cubes are properly looked good and unique in my apartment, but it would caught dead with them in my house).
Nor am I made of money, and after seeing what you might spend on these issues, I was convinced I was going to have to exercise a little creativity to make this work. This is what happened to me.
For starters, there is no law that says children have to have the best of everything. If you can afford a Tempur mattress for their babies, more power to you. However, the $ 1400 entry-level pop, I do not think many of our children rest on the foam of the short-term memory. Remember what it was when we were kids? All we needed was a place to become horizontal when you get tired. A double bed can be had for well under $ 200 and your children will be very happy with it.
There is a difference between antique shops and thrift stores furniture. I recommend the latter. You can often find great pieces at reasonable prices. Antique shops are nice but only if you have considerable money to spend and do not want to risk hurting anyone else. The obvious problem is that it is a used furniture store does not have what you need, you can not simply make a call and get it. On the other hand, one could get the next day, depending on what people carry. In order to check these stores two or three times a week.
I'm not a big fan of garage sales. As Jeff Foxworthy said it best: "People are selling their trash and used crawling through it like we're going to find priceless treasures. "Amen. Similarly, while 90% of the articles the garage sale are pretty useless, occasionally you can find decent pieces of furniture or even appliances. Some neighborhoods and subdivisions even sponsor community garage sales, where everybody has a sale on the same day. The result? One stop shopping. You may need to rise with the sun on a morning Saturday to find the good things, but it may be worthwhile.
One word. Craigslist. Or is that two words? Whatever. Many good deals can be found on Craigslist. I found a nice cooler for under $ 300 (several, actually), and we were able to provide my daughter's room with a desk, dresser, a stool, end table, and mirror $ 140. Not bad. Of course, try on craigslist can have dire consequences, such as theft at gunpoint. Always make an date the person doing business with a well-populated public place.
Also, spread the word among family and friends. You never know who has a table or a cabinet or a stool that is just want to get rid of. My ex-wife was able to play a chest of one of our neighbors who proceeded to dismantle, pull down the first, paint and reassemble. Granted it would probably have been cheaper to buy one, but you get the point.
You can also get decent furniture for a good price if you do not mind riding yourself. I have a desk in my home office from my old house that looks very impressive and I am proud to say that I built myself. Of course you do not want to move too many times. Screws and clamps are loosened over a piece moves around, and eventually may end up with some very unstable parts of furniture.
So there are some options to furnish your home without spending a fortune proverbial. I've seen all these wonders about, for what can be do. Now go forth, and make the house their home.
